Steven Asherman, President and CTOSteven Asherman

Mr. Asherman has over 30 years of software architecture and development experience, heavily concentrated in database application, distributed computing, and cyber security consulting, especially for large financial institutions. He holds U.S. patents for high precision database arithmetic, for secure, high performance, data access across the Internet, and for scalable, fault tolerant, grid computing.

Mr. Asherman founded Base One in 1993 to create a new breed of commercial database applications and the programming tools to build them. He is system architect and lead programmer of Base One’s database and distributed computing product line, which was released in 1996. His work with large customers led to innovative approaches for doing secure distributed processing and storage that can exploit the under-utilized capacity in an enterprise’s IT infrastructure.

Mr. Asherman’s specialties are designing, programming and leading the development of large-scale, high security, financial database applications. Clients have included: Aetna, Citibank, Cigna, Columbia Pictures, Deutsche Bank, Honeywell, IBM, Manufacturers Hanover, Marsh & McLennan, MCI, Morgan Guaranty and The New York Times. Recently, he assisted ManTech-Gray Hawk, a military contractor, in its counter terrorism security reviews of Niagara Mohawk Power and National Grid USA, and in the Critical Infrastructure Initiative of the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Mr. Asherman has a Computer Science degree from Columbia University (honorary member - American Statistical Association) and is on the board of directors of the New York Software Industry Association.

Howie Hunger, Senior VP, MarketingHowie Hunger

Mr. Hunger brings over 35 years of software marketing, sales and support experience to Base One. His 30+ years at IBM included over 15 years as a senior marketing executive.

As Software Management Director, IBM United States, Mr. Hunger was responsible for $5B in annual IBM software sales. Prior to that, he was IBM’s Group Director, Solution Developer Organization, where he created IBM’s strategy for working with the software industry. He established critical alliances with the largest software vendors, established over 1000 relationships with software vendors, and launched an IBM software reselling business for software vendors, which generated over $60M in software vendor revenue in its third year. As IBM’s Director for Thin Client Marketing, Howie was responsible for the worldwide marketing and product requirements for IBM’s thin client brand, establishing IBM as the most recognized brand in that market.

Prior to Base One, Mr. Hunger was Executive Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Neoware Systems, Inc. (a 125 employee, $60M, NASDAQ listed company). At Neoware, he was responsible for marketing, business development, professional services, customer support and fee based training. Under his guidance, key new product introductions, product positioning and press coverage raised Neoware from fifth in overall thin client market place sales to second (as measured by International Data Corporation).

Mr. Hunger holds a BS from Syracuse University. He is a past member of the Board of Governors of the Information Technology Association of America and of the Board of Directors of the American Software Association.


Joseph Barbaro, Senior VP, ServicesJoseph Barbaro

Mr. Barbaro has over 25 years of software development, documentation, and project management experience, including implementing web, Windows, and mainframe business applications for Citibank, Computer Associates, Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB), Deutsche Bank, IBM, NYNEX and TIAA-CREF. He began his career designing and coding financial systems for Central Hudson Gas & Electric and Equitable Life Assurance. As a consultant at IBM for over 6 years, he programmed financial, manufacturing, and communication software.

Mr. Barbaro’s work at Base One started with programming key modules of the data dictionary, security, and distributed processing software underlying Deutsche Bank’s securities custody system. As technical architect and lead consultant on Base One’s team at TIAA-CREF (Teacher’s Insurance), he designed and developed key components of their browser-based document retrieval system and led their common software component initiative. At CSFB, he was Base One's lead consultant in the project to move their fixed income commercial loan application to .NET technologies.

Mr. Barbaro has Masters Degree in Computer Science from Union College.


Michael Asherman, VP, ResearchMichael Asherman
Vice President, Research

Mr. Asherman has over 30 years of experience in software development and specializes in building web sites and Windows database applications. Clients have included: American Express, The Boston Stock Exchange, Banker and Tradesman, FundQuest, Iron Mountain, Keurig, the Massachusetts Division of Banks, and The Thomson Corporation.

Mr. Asherman began his career as an operating systems programmer for Data General and Honeywell, where he was responsible for developing the Multics indexed filing system. From there, he wrote commercial database software for Artificial Intelligence Corporation and Computer Corporation of America.

Since 1997, Mr. Asherman has been responsible for creating and enhancing Base One’s web site and documentation, including editorial work and technical writing. He also programmed key modules of Base One’s automated documentation system, which generates programmer manuals and on-line help.

Mr. Asherman has a degree in Physics from M.I.T.


Elena Malunis, VP, MarketingElena Malunis
Vice President, Marketing

Elena Malunis brings over 30 years of information technology industry experience, having held executive management positions in the IBM in software and solutions marketing, software product management, strategy and planning.

As IBM’s Worldwide Director of Wireless e-Business Solutions, Ms. Malunis led the creation of the solutions strategy to support’s IBM’s entry and market share growth in the wireless market. Before that, she was Director of Marketing Operations for the Year 2000 Initiative where she developed the strategy, led IBM’s worldwide go-to market effort, and managed the development and delivery of cross IBM solutions. As a result of her efforts, IBM’s Y2K web site was recognized by the Wall Street Journal as best of class for leadership content; and IBM’s Y2K activities were recognized by the US government, the UN, Small Business Association, UK Action 2000, Chinese and Australian governments and the World Bank.

Ms. Malunis holds a BA Summa Cum Laude from the City University of New York, and an MS in Mathematics from New York University.


Andrew Pugliese, VP, ServicesAndrew Pugliese

Mr. Pugliese has over 20 years of software development and project management experience. He specializes in the design and delivery of secure, large scale, database applications with distributed computing capabilities and multi-user transaction processing requirements. As lead database developer for Base One’s team at Edison Media Research, Mr. Pugliese helped build the exit polling system for Election Day 2004, which was used by major news organizations to project election winners for 120 races and to understand voter motivations and behavior. At Thomson Financial, he’s responsible for the database and application design and implementation of the new system for managing all information about organizations, financial instruments, and quotations.

Prior to joining Base One, Mr. Pugliese was Director of Ameritrade, where he led the development of business-to-business systems to support data aggregation and strategic partnerships. Before that, he worked for 10 years at Deutsche Bank North America, starting as a senior programmer, then systems architect and project manager. As vice president for U.S. and Latin America Custody Technology, he designed and led the development of a high-reliability data warehouse system built with Base One’s software that supports their global securities custody business.

Mr. Pugliese has a degree in Computer Science from Polytechnic University.

Mr. Kumar has over 20 years of software development experience, specializing in Windows and web programming. Prior to joining Base One in 1994, he was a senior software engineer at Coromandel, where he created some of their most successful products. These were commercial tools for programmers, successfully marketed by Microsoft and Borland, for the rapid development of Windows database applications.

Mr. Kumar was lead consultant on Base One’s team at Marsh & McLennan. For Deutsche Bank and Competitive Media Reporting, he developed database, screen management, security, and web reporting components.

Mr. Kumar has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Mysore, India and has a U.S. patent, jointly held with Mr. Asherman, for high precision database arithmetic.


Narayan Singhal, Vice President, ServicesNarayan Singhal

Mr. Singhal has over 10 years of software development experience and specializes in designing and programming Windows and web applications. He began his career writing programs for reactor simulators and industrial process controllers and went on to do architectural design and development of database and web applications for TIAA-CREF (Teacher’s Insurance). As a senior .NET and database developer for Base One’s team at Edison Media Research, Mr. Singhal implemented key components of the exit polling system for Election Day 2004, which was used by major news organizations to project election winners for 120 races.

In 1999 and 2000, Mr. Singhal was Base One's lead programmer on Competitive Media Reporting’s commercial web site for tracking ad occurrence and expense data. He returned to TIAA-CREF for Base One and led the development of an enterprise-wide reporting system for tracking all scanned customer correspondence plus intranet web sites for sharing corporate documents.

Mr. Singhal has a degree in Chemical Engineering from Rajsthan University, India.
