Base One specialized in building high
performance, web-enabled database applications. The company produced its own
line of software developer tools and provided consulting services related to
the development of software-as-a-service applications. Base One's customers
included the U.S. Government and Fortune 500 companies in finance,
insurance, media, and communications. The company held a number of U.S.
patents on its technologies for distributed computing and high-precision
arithmetic.
Base One's main offering was an application development framework, a collection of reusable software components for building
enterprise-level database applications.
In 2012, Base One launched a new
online publication, Essential Software Library, a subscription-based collection
of programming tools for Microsoft's .NET platform and Visual Studio, which included full source code.
Essential Software Library introduced a new model of open source - with pay - where independent
contributors to a collective body of work could receive a share of subscription
revenues on the basis of metered subscriber downloads.
